The Importance of a CMA Counselling Session

by Scott Roehl

Congratulations, you are interested in the CMA accounting designation. Now what?

The decision to pursue an accounting designation is filled with careful consideration and an eye to future goals both professionally and personally. Knowing this, it is important that you get all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Perhaps you have read through a CMA Path Brochure, visited the CMA Manitoba website, attended a CMA Information Session or talked to a family member or friend who is a CMA. These are all good sources to start your research and obtain more information about the designation.

The next step is to arrange a CMA Counselling Session which will further educate you on the program requirements, expectations and support provided. During this step, we will ask to receive a copy of your academic transcripts so that a transcript evaluation can be prepared for the counselling session.

During the session which usually lasts about an hour, Petra Noack Menzies (Program Administrator) will sit down with you to get to know you better, provide an overview of the program requirements, and most importantly answer your questions. A review of your transcript will also be provided such that if any missing requirements are identified, helpful guidance will be provided.

There is a lot to consider with a decision to pursue a CMA designation and a counselling session will help you make sense of it all.

  1. I have heard a lot of opinions regarding the cma program, and it seems reasonable to say that it seems to be a decent program. The thing that turned me off was the fact that all the texts are online, so printing costs add to the fees for the accelerated plan. I wonder though how this compares to CGA program, which the courses are supposed to be even more intensive and rigorous than what is covered in the cma’s accelerated program. My decision is not fully 100% for cma, but due to wanting to achieve a designation sooner, with pending familal responsibilities, perhaps cma would be more realistic. And as long as I wouldn’t have to retake courses to practice public accounting one day, (other than tax and auditing courses) then cma would be the choice designation. Any comments or suggestions here would definitely be appreciated.

  2. Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog and I appreciate your interest in CMA. In reading your thoughts, I commend you on the steps you are taking to review and consider your accounting designation options. The CMA Accelerated Program is a part-time program that qualifies individual’s for CMA’s rigorous National Entrance Exam. The exam ensures that students posses the knowledge to proceed with the Strategic Leadership Program. The Accelerated Program is intensive as well to ensure you have the necessary foundation in the Strategic Leadership Program.

Given some of the considerations you stated, I would highly recommend attending an upcoming CMA Information Session (http://www.cma-manitoba.com/index.cfm/ci_id/4984.htm) and setting up a counselling appointment with CMA Manitoba to review the program and requirements. This way you can make an informed decision whether it is the best fit for you and your future goals.
